How To Dress Up Your Work Wardrobe
How To Dress Up Your Work Wardrobe The clothes we wear express who we are but can also have a huge impact on how we â" and others â" see ourselves. Nowhere is this more important than in our work life as this is where we often need to call on every ounce of resilience and confidence we have to put in the best possible performance. A work wardrobe which makes you feel less than fantastic will soon start to drain your energy levels. Itâs true that you need to dress to impress at work, but the most important person you need to impress is yourself. Luckily, you donât need to rush out and buy bags and bags of new clothes to dress up your work wardrobe. Key features of a stylish work wardrobe Minimalist Some workplaces enforce a uniform, and itâs not in an effort to quash the style or self-expression of their employees. It creates a sense of identity in the company which can be great for teamwork and puts everyone on a level playing field, but it also removes the need for decision making when you get ready for work each day. Thatâs what you should keep in mind when choosing new workwear as a capsule wardrobe will provide a small range of versatile items you can rely on to make you look and feel your best every day. Comfortable Comfort and how easily you can move around in the clothes is essential as you really donât want to be worrying about pinching shoes, tight waistlines, or itchy fabrics during the working day. If an item makes you feel self-conscious, itâs going to affect not just how you feel but also your performance. High quality Putting a smart wardrobe together requires high-quality pieces which can withstand lots of wear and washing and still retain their shape. This is especially true when you are building a capsule wardrobe as youâll be wearing key pieces multiple times. Confidence boosting Confidence is key to success at work, and our outfit goes a long way to making ourselves feel positive and strong in what we do. A great dress, jumpsuit or blazer that tells people that you mean business can make you feel a full foot taller. 6 simple ways to dress up your work wardrobe Research what you like Browsing in stores or on the internet is a great way to work out which outfit styles you prefer before you part with any money. It may be that what you like is quite different from whatâs in your wardrobe and thatâs okay. Often we buy and hold on to clothes that, if weâre honest, we will never wear. You may want to think about stylish celebrities or even people from your workplace who have a great sense of style. When youâve collected plenty of images of the types of outfits you like, you can note down the similarities between them, such as color schemes. Choose 2-3 garments which make you feel great There are some garments which might be slightly unusual choices for you, but when you put them on they make you feel like a million dollars. These are the pieces which you can call on when youâre not feeling confident on the inside which give you an extra boost of self-belief. It could be a great pair of heels, a bold jumpsuit or a fantastic piece of outerwear such as a Gloverall peacoat which is not only stylish but also perfect for keeping you warm this winter. Include 2-3 versatile staples Next, come the classic pieces which youâll probably pull out several times in a week as they are versatile enough to be dressed up or down. The little black dress or pantsuit is a great choice for many women as they can be worn with any colors and flats or heels depending on how formal you want it to be. These staple pieces should be of a high enough quality that they can withstand several wears. Depending on your workplace you may be able to wear some smart jeans which can be dressed up with a blazer. Add in the basics Your basic items will bring your confidence-boosting pieces and versatile staples together. This includes a range of plain t-shirts in colors which will coordinate with your pants and skirts or even underneath strappy dresses. Black pants and skirts will come to your rescue when youâre struggling for inspiration during the morning rush. Ideally, your basics should be neutral and plain as possible (avoid bright patterns) to ensure you have more combinations to choose from. You can choose to include color, but try to keep to block colors which complement each other. Finish with accessories Nobody wants to be swapping handbags every day to ensure that it coordinates with their outfit, especially when youâre rushing around in the mornings. Itâs best to use a single bag which will look great with anything in your wardrobe and is big enough to hold what you need without feeling like youâre lugging around a suitcase. In terms of shoes, just 2 or 3 pairs should give you plenty of options for every outfit as long as you choose them in neutral colors. A comfortable pair of smart flats and a pair of heels is ideal. Finally, your underwear should be supportive and comfortable â" including pantyhose that donât ladder at the slightest touch. Throw your own fashion show When you have all of your wardrobe pieces together, itâs time to try everything on. See how many different outfits you can create from what you have and make sure you feel great in everything. You might feel that something is missing like a stunning accessory or a couple of extra cardigans, or that you could do with another versatile staple item to give you more flexibility. On the other hand, you might want to hold off making any more purchases until youâve lived with the wardrobe for a month or so. You might want to hang your work garments in a separate place to your casual and home clothes to make finding your outfit even easier each morning. With your stylish but simple work wardrobe in place, you can now look forward to stress-free mornings, minimal laundry and plenty of compliments from your co-workers.

All Brands Should Embrace the Green Movement - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
All Brands Should Embrace the Green Movement - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Daniel Esty, who is a Yale professor and expert on the environment. One of the major news themes in the past year has been the environment and how companies should go green. Daniel is one of the most knowledgeable people on this topic, so we discuss how going green can actually help improve a companies bottom line and attract and retain employees. Do you think companies should embrace a green culture to attract and retain Generation-Y? One of the big surprises that emerged out of the research behind GREEN TO GOLD was the importance of bringing environment into business strategy as a matter of human resources policy. Many companies report that many of todays younger employees (and potential hires) want to work for a company whose corporate culture and values they respect. Concern for the environment emerges as a core value for many, especially the most highly sought after knowledge workers. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-sfjJ9AdFE] Can you explain corporate/social responsibility for the environment and why people and companies should start caring in a big way? Companies have started to care for environment in a big way for reasons that go way beyond corporate social responsibility, which always seems like a narrow commitment to be a good citizen and do fewer harmful things. Todays embrace of the environment as a core element of strategy is all about success in the marketplace. Companies that promote eco-efficiency, especially in the face of $100/barrel oil prices, will cut costs and improve their competitive position. Likewise, businesses that manage eco-risks better than the competition will see their costs go down and their competitive position strengthen. And many corporations are finding ways to drive revenues with goods or services that have a green dimension. Others are building their brands and corporate images around being environmental solutions providers. Think, for example, of GEs rebranding around ecomagination. The GREEN TO GOLD story is about growing both the top line and the bottom line by bringing an environmental lens to every aspect of corporate activity. What impact does a green-friendly company have over bottom-line results and the overall economy? Under todays circumstances (notably high energy prices), companies that go green may well be positioned as low-cost providers. And they may well be able to differentiate their products in the marketplace and thus deliver more value to their customers, all of which contributes to market strength and profitability. Why is a green-company more attractive to work at? Many employees today have lots of choices about where to work, so companies that have attractive corporate cultures, including a commitment to the environment, emerge as the employers of choice. Environmental protection is fundamental to quality of life and many people want to have these issues addressed in their professional as well as their personal lives. Do you think all companys in the future will have to be green? What will happen if a companys chooses not to go that way? I believe that most companies will find that it pays to go green but how green will depend on the circumstances of the particular business. It is also the case that a mere commitment to being green will not advantage a company. In bringing an environmental focus into a business, it is important for the companys leaders to be strategic. Environmental initiatives do not pay off unless they are pursued with the same degree of systematic care and analytic rigor as any other sort of corporate effort. - Daniel C. Esty is the Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, with appointments at both the Yale Law School and the Yale School of Forestry Environmental Studies. He is also the Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy as well as the Center for Business and the Environment at Yale. Professor Estyâs research has focused on next generation regulation and the relationships between the environment and trade, competitiveness, governance, and development. He is the author or editor of nine books and numerous articles on environmental policy issues.

Small Business Saturday Making Time For Social Media
Small Business Saturday Making Time For Social Media Social media is certainly not a magic wand, but it is a fantastic way to network and grow awareness of your business. There are two obstacles I regularly hear from people. They say: I dont know where to start I dont have enough time Knowing where to start isnt as much as an obstacle as you might think. You are probably already on one social network already. Step one is to maximize your activity on that one network. You have a personal profile on LinkedIn, great! But are you really getting the most out of it? See if you are doing these things: Updating your status update daily with interesting, relevant stories, news, questions or information. Adding key words to your skills expertise Revamping your profile summary to tell your story and highlight your unique value proposition Tweak your headline for optimum search results Add media rich content to highlight your portfolio of accomplishments or show off your work Join relevant groups Participate in group discussions Invite new people you meet or want to meet to join your network Create a business page As the saying goes, Lather. Rinse. Repeat. These are daily and weekly activities you will want to do regularly! Do you have a Facebook account? Are you using it for business? You will probably want or need to create a business page on Facebook. Actively promote your Facebook business page and invite your friends to like it. Give them a reason to visit your page- great visuals, great information they may not find on LinkedIn, give-aways or free content, special deals, stories about customers, testimonials Make sure youve got a link to your website in your about section Create events and invite your friends to attend or share the news Twitter anyone? This open network is one of the best, in my opinion, for reaching out and establishing new relationships. Join Twitter chats or host one Share great content, news events, related to your expertise Always thank people for sharing your tweets Participate in #FF (Follow Friday) by listing the Twitter users you most respect, value and/or enjoy Find and follow new accounts by using FollowerWonk or other tricks Just in case you want a handy checklist, you can find a really helpful one here by Top Dog Social. You can also find 11 Beginner Twitter Tips here. Investing Time As with any new task, there is a learning curve. But once you get the hang of this stuff, you can literally get a lot of it done in about an hour a day. Pre-schedule tweets using Buffer, SocialOomph, Tweetdeck or Hootsuite Cross-share on multiple networks (when appropriate) using the tools just mentioned. (Hootsuite is my weapon of choice) Get a good feed of content to share: following people on Twitter or Facebook; using RSS feedreaders like The Old Reader or Feedly; searching Technorati, Alltop, or even LinkedIns news customize news feature. Set a timer and see how much you can get done in 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at the end of the day! Acing the Job Interview Ten Pointers for Landing Your Dream Job - Hallie Crawford
Acing the Job Interview Ten Pointers for Landing Your Dream Job So youâve landed a job interview. Congratulations! Now, are you ready? Whether youâve been on a dozen interviews (or none!), your key to success is preparedness knowing yourself, knowing the company, knowing whether the job is truly a fit for you and vice versa. When it is a fit, youâll know it, and youâll ace it. To make an impression that will have them saying, âYouâre hired!â. And work towards finding the right fit for you as well (critically important!), here are ten interview tips from our years of career counseling. 1. Relax, youâll be more authentic and confident if you do. The first suggestion is to relax. Think of all the ways you have provided value to your past employers. Did you land a huge account? Go above and beyond on a certain project? Take a deep breath, recall your accomplishments, and let go of the tension. Breathe deeply during the course of the interview to remain grounded and centered. Keep your feet flat on the floor if that helps. And resist the urge to talk too much. When you get nervous you might say too much and can lose sight of what you were saying or dig yourself into a hole. Answer the question, give them an example, read their body language to determine if they got it, then pause and be ready to move on. When you are relaxed you can better follow the natural cadence of the conversation and get into a groove with your interviewer. When youâre in your head being nervous, itâs much harder to read the energy of the room and gauge how things are going. 2. Remember, youâre interviewing them, too. So many people view the job interview as a test â" and theyâd better pass with flying colors or theyâre in trouble. Yes, youâre being tested â" to see if youâre a good match for the company. But remember it works the other way too. This is your chance to see if theirs is the kind of corporate culture that fits your personality type, career values and your work style. Itâs possible that youâll get there and find out you donât even want the job. Or, you may decide that itâs only worth it if they meet you at a certain salary amount. Ask lots of direct, specific questions⦠know what youâre getting into, and then weigh your options carefully. 3. Be prepared, know the company. Organizations have a âpersonalityâand a brand, and itâs important to understand what that is inside out before you step into the interview. Read their press room page on their website. Find out if theyâve been in the news in the past year. Visit their social media pages to find out not only recent news but what their culture might be like based on their online personae and presence. Scan online reviews on Glassdoor.com. You may or may not like what you find, again itâs all about finding the right fit for you as well. 4. Take the pressure off ⦠avoid becoming too attached Think of the job interview as an opportunity to cast seeds and check things out. This is a âget to know youâ or feeling out phase, not a contest or do-or-die situation. Try to avoid becoming too attached to any one job. That old saying, âDonât put all your eggs in one basketâ could not be more true than for the career search. Sometimes things take an unexpected twist or turn. You could be â90% sureâ that youâll be on Company Xâs payroll next month⦠and suddenly the phone rings with an even better offer. Put your best foot forward in every interviewer, but always intend that the right thing will come along whether itâs this job or another one down the line. This will prevent you from becoming too attached and coming across as desperate or, if you donât get the job, too disappointed. 5. If they ask about your weaknesses, answer honestly. Each person excels in some areas more than they do in others. If you are honest, you stand a better chance of being placed in the best possible career for you. So when the question about weaknesses comes up, tell the truth. Just be sure to spin it in a solution-oriented way that tells the interviewer you know how to overcome and manage such challenges. For example, if youâre not detail-oriented, you could say so â" but also add that you always give yourself extra time on projects that involve lots of detail. Or, you could say that you make a great âbig picture partner and strategistâ when paired with someone for whom little details are their strong suit. And ensure of course, that the weakness youâve chosen to discuss is not one that is a make or break for that specific position. If it is, think twice about whether this job is really the right fit for you. 6. Write a list of five key points you want to express in your interview. Youâll feel more confident and at-ease if you prepare for your interview in advance, we know this. One way to do this is to make a list of your 5 best qualities and accomplishments â" what you bring to the table. Consider soft skills as well as hard skills. And your greatest accomplishments in your career to date. On the day of the interview, two things can happen. One, the interviewer will ask you specific questions where you can work your responses around the 5 points you want to mention. Or, two, youâll end up talking about other things â" but when the time comes that they ask for your questions or thoughts, you can use that opportunity to make your points. Either way, write them down so at the end of the interview you are confident you have referenced everything you wanted to mention. 7. Write a list of questions, and donât be shy. Asking good questions is a great way to find out if this new company meets the requirements of your dream job â" and if theyâll fill the gaps where your old company fell short. Donât be shy. Ask them about the culture, the management style, the company values and how they live by them. Ask them who best succeeds in this position and at their organization. What the expectations and goals are for the position in the first 30-60-90 days. At the end, ask them if they have any hesitations about moving you to the next round. And address those hesitations if they do. 8. Find out who you are interviewing with. If you know that you will be speaking to the head of Human Resources, keep in mind that youâll be asked more general questions. In this case, be prepared to talk about your career history and background as well as your personality, work style and unique qualities. If you have certain items that youâd like addressed, such as day-to-day responsibilities and what the positions demands of you, know that these questions are better left for your potential boss or the head of the department where youâll be working. Being clear about who youâll be meeting with will help you understand the expectations of the time youâll have together. And it will help you tailor your questions and responses as well to what they would be looking to determine from you. 9. Do a quick mini-visualization beforehand. Professional athletes do it â" you can, too. Picture how you want the interview to go and the ideal outcome. Set your intentions. âI am going to show these people exactly why Iâm more qualified than any of the other candidates who apply. I will do this by pointing out my accomplishments and core strengths, which are: X, Y, Z.â Imagine that at the close of the interview, youâre smiling, shaking hands with the hiring manager, and feeling on top of the world â" like you really nailed it. Envision getting a callback from them that clearly indicates how impressed they were with your professionalism and capabilities. Whatever image or scenario works for you to feel confident and tap into what you want to happen ideally from this interview, consider that. Keep it short and sweet and notice how you feel when you visualize. The goal is to feel confident, energized, and at ease. 10. Dress for the job you want. Look professional, wear something that shows your personality as well, and dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Consider the environment and the industry but err on the side of looking more professional than less so. And choose something to wear that makes you feel confident and like you are the person who is best suited for the position. Donât lose the momentum â" go grab a pen and paper right now and begin to formulate your strategy for youe next interview. Go into it feeling proud of your accomplishments. Know that even if it doesnât turn out to be the job of your dreams, thatâs okay. The career search is an ongoing process and learning experience. Whether youve been on a dozen interviews (or none!), your key to success is preparedness. See how to put focus on your strong points and downplay your weak ones, and make an impression that will have them saying, Youre hired! Read on for ten great tips from my years of career counseling. 1: Relax, youll be more authentic and confident if you do. The best suggestion I can give before an interview is to just relax. Easier said than done, right? It helps to remember that you have education, training, and experience working in your favor. Think of all the ways you provided value to your past employer. Did you land a huge account? Go above and beyond on a certain project? Take a deep breath, recall your accomplishments, and let go of the tension. Know that youre worthy and who knows. Maybe youre even overqualified for the position! 2: Remember, youre interviewing them, too. So many people view the job interview as a test and theyd better pass with flying colors or theyre in trouble! On some level, yes, youre being tested but the test is simply to see if youre a good match for the company. It works the other way, too. This is your chance to see if theirs is the kind of corporate culture that fits your style. Its possible that youll get there and find out you dont even want the job! Or, you might figure out that its only worth it if they meet you at a certain salary amount. Ask lots of questions know what youre getting into, and then weigh your options carefully. 3: Be prepared, know the company. Youll notice that many companies not only have a specific personality, but theyre mighty proud of the little perks and quirks that make them unique. Do they have their own brand of soda, like Microsoft? Do they offer Flex Time for working parents? Find out if theyre noteworthy in the news. Visit their company website and do your online research. Were they part of a recent merger? There is no better way to show your sincere interest than actually being interested. You might learn something really cool about this company that tells you, Go for it! Or, you could uncover some hidden dirt that makes you think twice before working there. 4: Take the pressure off you have options! Think of the job interview as an opportunity to cast seeds and check things out. This is a get to know you or feeling out phase, not a contest or do-or-die situation. Try to avoid becoming too attached to any one job. That old saying, Dont put all your eggs in one basket could not be more true than for the career search. Sometimes things take an unexpected twist or turn. You could be 90% sure that youll be on Company Xs payroll next month and suddenly the phone rings with an even better offer. 5: If they ask about your weaknesses, answer honestly. For example, if youre not detail-oriented, you could say so but also add that you always give yourself extra time on projects that involve lots of detail. Or, you could say that you make a great big picture partner and strategist when paired with someone for whom little details are their strong suit. 6: Write a list of five key points you plan to express in your interview. Youre almost certain to feel more confident and at-ease if you prepare for your interview in advance. One way to do this is to make a list of your best qualities and accomplishments what you bring to the table. On the day of the interview, two things can potentially happen. One, the interviewer will ask you specific questions where you can simply slant your responses around the points you planned to mention. Or, two, youll end up talking about other things but when the time comes that they ask for your questions or thoughts, use this opportunity to make your points. 7: Write a list of questions, things you need to know. Sometimes when the pressures on, its hard to know what to ask. But do take some time to consider whats most important to you in your career and the company where youll be spending the majority of your time. A good way to remember what you want to know, is to flash back to the last job you had. Lets say you didnt care for the way you had four different managers to report to. On interview day, you can ask: Who will I be reporting to and whats the general workflow for the department? Asking good questions is a great way to find out if this new company offers similar perks as you had before and if theyll fill the gaps where your old company fell short. 8: Find out who you are interviewing with. If you know that you will be speaking to the head of Human Resources, keep in mind that youll be asked more general questions. In this case, be prepared to talk about your career history and background as well as your personality, work style and unique qualities. If you have certain items that youd like addressed, such as day-to-day responsibilities and what the positions demands of you, know that these questions are better left for your potential boss or the head of the department where youll be working. 9: Do a quick mini-visualization beforehand. Professional athletes do it you can, too. Picture how you want the interview to go and the ideal outcome. Set your intentions. I am going to show these people exactly why Im more qualified than any of the other candidates who apply. I will do this by pointing out my accomplishments and core strengths, which are: X, Y, Z. Imagine that at the close of the interview, youre smiling, shaking hands with the hiring manager, and feeling on top of the world like you really nailed it! Envision getting a callback from them that clearly indicates how impressed they were with your professionalism and capabilities. 10: Dress the part. Look professional and wear something that shows your personality as well, depending on the type of job. Consider the environment. For example, many jobs where employees meet with clients and vendors require the gold standard suit and tie/skirt and blazer. Other places have changed with the times, and now offer dress down Fridays or adopt corporate casual which means khakis for guys, and skirts or nice pants for the ladies. So if its formal, be a little more formal. If its not, tone it down and be casual yet crisp and neat. Look put together, cleaned up. Add a bit of personal style maybe a favorite gold watch or silk scarf. Try to conceal things like unusual piercings or body art unless of course, you work in an artistic field and thats the expected look. Chances are after reading this, youre already feeling more confident about your professional abilities. Dont lose the momentum go grab a pen and paper right now and begin to formulate your strategy for interview success. Go into this feeling proud of your many accomplishments.
